How to Behave With Clients: The Behind-the-Chair Etiquette Guide

Updated January 2026·8 min read

Skill gets a client into your chair once. Behaviour gets them back for 10 years. The stylists with fully booked columns aren't always the most talented — they're the most emotionally intelligent behind the chair.

The first 60 seconds set the entire appointment

Stand up when they arrive. Use their name twice in the first minute. Compliment something specific about them (not their hair — anything but the hair). Offer water before you offer anything else. This tiny sequence puts a client at ease and primes them to trust your recommendations.

The consultation: shut up and listen

Most stylists talk too much in the consultation. Ask three questions, then be quiet: 'What's been frustrating you about your hair lately?' 'What's your morning routine?' 'What would make you feel great walking out of here today?' Take notes. Repeat their words back.

The upsell that never feels like an upsell

Never say 'do you want to add a treatment?' Say instead: 'Given how dry your ends are, I'd love to do a bond-builder today — it'll make the color last two weeks longer. Cool if I add it?' Frame every upsell as a recommendation for their goal, not a sale.

Handling a client who's unhappy in the mirror

Don't defend. Don't panic. Say: 'Tell me exactly what feels off — I want to get this right for you.' Then fix it, at no charge. A client whose complaint you handle beautifully becomes a lifer.

The end-of-appointment rebook script

Never let a client stand up before you've said: 'To keep this looking great, I'd love to see you back in 6 weeks. I've got Thursday the 14th at 2, or Saturday the 16th at 10 — which works better?' Two options, both yes. Rebook rates jump from 30% to 70%+ with this one line.

The tiny things that create obsession

Remember their kids' names. Text them a mirror selfie a week later. Send a birthday card. Give a Christmas card. These cost nothing. They generate 90% of your referrals.

The takeaway

Talent fills a chair once. Warmth, listening and follow-up fill a chair for a decade. Get the etiquette right and marketing becomes a rounding error.
